So...it was my birthday a few weeks ago! I normally don't do much for my birthday but my family tradition is to eat boiling crab! Oysters, shrimp, crawfish, wings, catfish, everything whole shabang.
This year, I really wanted a Vietnamese fruit tart cake. I used to enjoy these for my birthdays as a kid and haven't had it in yeaaaaaars. I wanted to revisit those childhood memories and eat one of my fave types of cake!
A fruit tart cake has fruti on top, fluffy cake, and also my fave part: the crunchy flaky part. I know some cakes at some Vietnamese bakeries are not very crunchy and get soggy fast. I honestly didn't know where to get one aside from Van's Bakery. Yelp wasn't much help either because I feel like the real ones that would know where are more Vietnamese peeps that probably don't use Yelp (does that make sense?).
Kevin took me to the Van's Bakery by ABC Supermarket!
Also dropped by the Banh Mi Che Cali nearby to get some crispy sesame mung bean balls!
Omg I wanted some pate chaud too! These are filled with pork usually. Yumm..
Okay back to the inside of Van's Bakery. SO MANY CAKES! According to the worker, they are made fresh.
Gotta take some typical pics of cutting the cake. LOL
My birthdays are usually lowkey. I don't do much and don't post much on social media because it is my break from being online. It's nice to take a break from the spotlight sometimes and have a digital detox.
But why am I sharing my birthday with you now, weeks later? Not because I wanted to hear Happy Birthday wishes. But because I wanted to share with y'all how not crispy the cake was!
Although I enjoyed the cake, the crispy parts were soggy. They weren't as crispy as I would have liked. And I mean SUPER CRISPY.
So I don't know if I recommend Van's Bakery... LOL Maybe I was unlucky T_T
HOWEVER...I found out about a new spot! (I should have asked my bro sooner). For my mom's bday, my brother bought a fruit tart cake as well and it was soooooo incredibly crispy! I was amaaaazed and wanted the cake to myself. The cake is from Long Phung in Westminster nearby My Thuan supermarket on Newland/Westminster.
Umm... if anyone wants to buy me a Vietnamese fruit tart cake next time... please buy it from Long Phung. IT WAS SOOOOOOOOOO CRISPYYYYYYYYYYY!
